Sisters (in Tech) Are Doing it For Themselves

I've been thinking about the subject for over a week now, ever since Kim posted Where are the Women Tech Bloggers?

An outsider looking in could be forgiven for thinking that the tech industry is dominated by aggressive, ambitious men. Certainly the search blog landscape has its fair share of loud macho stereotypes, always trying to one-up each other with jargonized posts, pointless SEO ranking competitions or bizarre territorial pissings. And there's only one woman listed amongst the A-List bloggers. Why is that?

I personally think it's because we sisters are busy doin' it for ourselves. Yep, most women in tech are far too busy actually working to be bothered with "mine is bigger than yours" comparisons, sexually suggestive blog illustrations, endless Digg backslaps and other male-dominated time-wasting. We just get on with it. Thanks to Kim for the list of sisters doin' it for themselves.

Q and A: I've cleaned up the site spam so why isn't our home page being indexed by Google?

Dear Kalena...

Hope you're happy and healthy. Thanks so much for your help last time. I cleaned the hidden text off the page and we got re-indexed quite quickly.

But now we seem to have dropped out again. Although some of our subsidiary pages are indexed, the homepage does not seem to be, unless I'm searching incorrectly.

Any ideas?

Best wishes
Robin
www.breatheonline.com/

Kalena's Answer:

Dear Robin

Ok, a couple of things:

1) You obviously have two domains pointing to the same content (www.breatheonline.com and www.breatheyoga.co.uk). If you view the cache of your .com home page, you'll see that Gooogle produces the cache of the .co.uk home page. It seems that Google has decided that your UK domain is the main one and seems to be caching only that site.

2) A "site:URL" search for each domain shows that 22 pages from your .co.uk domain have been indexed while 4 pages from your .com domain have been indexed. To have Google index two domains with identical content is a dangerous thing because one will usually be suppressed and you rarely have the control over which one. I'm not sure about your DNS and IP setup, but you need to decide which domain you wish to promote in search engines and park the other domain to the same IP as the main one. You can also inform Google which site is your main domain via the Sitemaps Protocol. Check out the free XML sitemaps creator that I recommend.

3) Google is indexing and caching your home page at www.breatheyoga.co.uk just fine, from what I'm seeing. You simply need to do a search for your full URL. The last cache of the page was taken as recently as 26 November.

4) Once you've sorted out your domain issue, it might be a good idea to prepare an XML sitemap and submit it to Google Sitemaps as explained in Google's Webmaster Tools area.

5) Some of your incoming link partners are pointing to the .com site while others point to the .co.uk site. This is diluting your link popularity. Decide which domain is more important to promote via search engines and ask all your link partners to change their links to point to that site. Make sure you do the same thing with all your internal site links.

Dear Kalena...

Something is redirecting my searches to sites I don't want and suggesting links I don't want. What could cause that?

User-Friendly Client Management Software

I've said before that I love software that makes my job easier. This week my husband put me onto WHM Complete Solution. The developers describe it as a "Complete Client Management, Billing and Support System for Web Hosts", but it works for any Internet-based business. We are in the process of switching our existing Search Engine College student registration process over to it.

It has a client login area where customers can view FAQs, lodge a support ticket or make a purchase. It has a built-in shopping cart which is really easy to use and supports a huge range of payment gateways, including PayPal and 2Checkout (our main two providers). We haven't yet trialled the client invoicing but if it's anything like the cart process, it should be perfect. It also has a built-in affiliate program. You can see how it compares to other providers here.

The main reason I wanted to tell you all about it is the user-friendly cart design. It is almost impossible to "break" during the sales process and even if a user abandons the sale halfway, it creates an invoice and sends them an email with their username and login so they can view the invoice they abandoned. This is a great feature to combat cart abandonment or usability issues.

It also captures the user's details and sends them to the vendor, regardless of the outcome of the cart process and automatically bans IP addresses that have 3 successive invalid login attempts. It has a 15 day fully functional trial and after trialling we are definitely going to purchase!

I was just really impressed with it and thought you all might like it.

Q and A: How does Ask.com rank compared to other search engines?

Dear Kalena...

How does Ask.com rank compared to other search engines?

Natasha

Kalena's Answer:

Dear Natasha

I am assuming by "rank" you mean popularity with searchers? This can be measured via search market share. According to the latest figures, Ask.com holds somewhere between 3 and 6 percent of the US search market right now.

Why the range? Well unfortunately, search market stats can be less than accurate, as Danny Sullivan points out in his recent post Search Popularity Stats: Sliced and Diced.

Beer and Farenheit 9/11

It's been a hell of a day. I was working until 1.30am this morning and then my son woke me up at 6.00am. I spent the morning trying to sound coherent while answering media enquiries about Search Engine College and then stupidly decided to swim 30 laps at the local pool this afternoon on a 35 degree celsius (95 farenheit) day.

To say I'm exhausted is the world's biggest understatement so I know you'll forgive me if I skip an FAQ today. Speaking of farenheit, it's time for a Crown Lager with my husband and an encore of our Farenheit 9/11 DVD.

Happy Thanksgiving to all my US readers. Scoff that turkey!

Google Sitemaps Gains Support from Yahoo and MSN

The uptake of Google Sitemaps by webmasters has resulted in an unexpected alliance between Google, Yahoo and MSN. The three search giants have joined forces to launch Sitemaps.org, a new webmaster protocol to encourage a web standard for sitemap creation and submission.

Included in the protocol is:
  • an XML schema format recommended for sitemaps
  • definitions of the various XML tags
  • detailed instructions for sitemap creation
  • sitemap validation tools
  • instructions for alerting search engine crawlers about your sitemap
Looks like paid trusted feed services are dead and buried! Good riddance. And if you're looking for a free XML sitemap creator, check out this one.

Q and A: Can you recommend any SEO companies?

Dear Kalena...

Can you recommend any SEO companies and/or consultants? Preferably affordable ones.

Tom

Kalena's Answer:

Dear Tom

I'm not in the habit of recommending one SEO firm over another (especially as I run my own SEO consultancy!). But what you probably want is a list of sites that each have a substantial list of recommended SEO/SEM companies.

Q and A: Has our site been penalized by Google?

Dear Kalena...

An excellent website! have found many useful articles in the "ask kalena" section.

I was curious as to whether our website www.simondelasalle.com has been penalized for some reason. We have recently changed our navigation from image based to text links to increase the amount of keywords on the page. Is it possible this website has been "sandboxed"?

It looks like Google's indexing of the site is weak compared to MSN. Any feedback you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time and have an excellent day.

Simon

Kalena's Answer:

Dear Simon

Thank you for the coffee! The caffeine is greatly appreciated.

I've had a look at your site and the first thing that strikes me is that there is no Google cache for many of the pages. Your home page has a healthy Toolbar PageRank of 5 out of 10 so there is no penalty. Next, I entered your URL into Google's new Site Status Tool. Bingo! I found two problems:

1) Googlebot last successfully accessed your home page on Jul 29, 2006 (which explains the caching issue).

2) Google does not know about all the pages of your site.

I'm not sure when your major re-design occurred, but if it was around the end of July, then it's highly likely the site has since been sandboxed, as you guessed. Best course of action is to prepare and submit an XML sitemap to Google Sitemaps using a free XML sitemap creator and wait till Googlebot travels your way again. After verifying your site with Google, you can check if Googlebot struck errors during his last crawl.

Good Luck!

Q and A: If dynamically generated pages don't technically exist, how do they get indexed?

Dear Kalena...

I am puzzled about dynamically generated pages. Since they don't actually 'exist', how do they get indexed? (I know you can mod_rewrite their urls, but they still don't 'exist' anywhere, right?)

AP

Kalena's Answer:

Dear AP

Well technically, no they don't exist until the page is "called". But from what I understand, a search robot, when indexing a site, can create them on the fly, just like a browser can. That's how they get indexed and links between them are followed.

Most search spiders/robots won't index more than a few pages of a dynamic site because of the unknown number of pages they represent. That's why services such as Google Sitemaps and Yahoo Site Explorer have developed - so you can "tell" a search engine how many URLs your site has - dynamic or otherwise. You should create an XML sitemap and submit it to both services.

Mod_rewrite is good, but prob not necessary now that engines have better technical ability to process dynamically generated content.

Dear Kalena...

I have a doubt plz help me. I think you can help. How do we add different keywords to each page of a blog like we do in a website? This blog has done it. How did he do it?

thank you

Kalena's Answer:

Dear John

To add tailored Title and META Tags to your blog pages, or to optimize them for keywords, you need to edit the HTML template for your blog. If you use Blogger, you simply access the tab marked "Template". For other blog templates, this article should help you.

Q and A: How do I view all the rankings for my site under multiple keywords?

Dear Kalena...

I recently launched a website called Giantshopper.com and am interested in knowing where my website ranks on various search engines. However, I am unable to see where it ranks using specific keywords unless I view the results page-by-page. Do you recommend any sites which will help solve my issue?

Best Regards,
Sam

Kalena's Answer:

Hi Sam

There are endless software tools on the market these days that will assist you to view the search rankings for your site under different keywords. What they do is conduct multiple searches for keywords on the search engines and then collate the results for you in various reports.

Because bulk querying software as described can cause a drain on their servers, their use is frowned on by the search engines, noticeably Google. Therefore you should make sure you use software that has "polite-searching" built in and/or conducts the searches using an API key provided to users by Google. One of the better ones I've used is WebPosition. Others I've heard about but can't vouch for include WebCEO and IBP.

Rant of the Week: Blog Spam Sucks!

Excuse me while I step up on the soapbox today. It's been a while since I've had a Rant of the Week and a recent experience has given me the perfect opportunity.

We acquired a new client last month who had been having trouble gaining good rankings in Google for their major keywords. They have a b2b wholesale site where they sell raw materials to retailers in a particular industry. I'm not going to mention their product, but let's just pretend they provide shoe laces for shoe manufacturers.

Now, this client had a website that had been developed by a designer who obviously thought they knew a lot about SEO. They were wrong. Sure, it consisted of flat HTML pages and had plenty of body text on each page, a text navigation menu and a decent site map. But the site was absolutely stuffed to the brim with excessive keywords. Let's pretend their main keyword phrase was "blue suede shoelaces". This was repeated ad nauseum within the navigation menu, stuffed willy-nilly into nonsensical sentences in the visible body text, shoved into the Alt Tags and of course, obsessively repeated within the Title and META tags of each and every page. And to top it all off, the web designer had decided to integrate a Free For All link directory within the site, swapping links with everyone from pet hair removalists to wooden toy sellers - all having zero in common with the actual product sold by the client.

The designer had since left and their site rankings and PageRank had taken a nose-dive on Google, the site having obviously triggered some spam filters. Feeling sorry for them, I agreed to take over the SEO of their site, get it cleaned up and submit a re-inclusion request to Google to ensure any manual penalties (if any) were removed.

No sooner had I started cleaning up the site code when the client told me that they had been "reported to Google by WordPress for spamming". Digging deeper, I discovered that the client had another domain with almost identical content (!) and had been using multiple blog accounts to promote both domains. I immediately asked for the blog addresses and was absolutely amazed at the huge mess of blogspam I found. There were over 10 different blog accounts posting nonsensical paragraphs with links back to their sites. What a disaster!

[soapbox]

Where on earth do webmasters get the idea that having multiple blogs and posting nothing but keywords and keyword phrases would help their search engine rankings? Sure, this type of search engine spam might help for a very short time, but it was always doomed to fail once the search engines and readers figured out what they were doing. Do they take advice that this is a good way to promote their site? Because that's very poor advice. I just can't believe the ridiculous lengths people will go to in order to "game the search engines". For Pete's sake, even elegant black hat spam is classier than nonsensical blogspam. It proves my point that a little bit of SEO knowledge is a very dangerous thing.

[/soapbox ]

Now if I had known about the severity of the spamdexing at the start of the project, I almost certainly would NOT have taken it on because it is very difficult to regain a good standing in Google if you have conducted serious spamming. I'm surprised the spam didn't earn my client's site a manual penalty in Google. As it stands, all the blogs have been given PageRank zero penalties and their main site has suffered - guilt by association. As I explained to the client, WordPress were right to report them to Google because what they had been doing goes WAY against Google's webmaster guidelines. It is the worst case of blog spamming I have ever seen.

Now all we can do is try to get the site re-instated in Google's good books, but I honestly don't know if we'll be successful in this. Here's the process I'm following:

1) Having the client delete ALL of the blogspam, including any old posts and shutting down the blogs completely.

2) Delete the site containing the duplicate content and shutting down the domain (removing contact details at the registrar level).

3) Deleting the FFA directory and asking participants to remove any links pointing to the client's site.

4) Cleaning up the main site to meet Google's Webmaster Guidelines.

5) Creating a new XML sitemap for the site and submitting it to Google Sitemaps and Yahoo Site Explorer.

6) Having the client submit a Re-inclusion Request form to Google detailing the above history and site clean-up.

7) Undertaking a long term link-building campaign for the site, seeking out only high-quality link partners or one-way links from sites in the same industry.

I'll keep everyone posted with progress.

Q and A: Has my site been dropped by Google?

Dear Kalena...

My site was in the top 5 on google for about 8 different keywords. Two days ago we a uploaded a new sitemap following changes in the site. This site map had errors as pointed out by Google. The errors were then corrected. But now I find that the site does not figure anywhere in the results and if it does, it is on historical data, not from present crawl. Is this a temporary problem because of the erroneous sitemap or has my site been dropped? My account with google sitemaps still shows that over 1500 pages are indexed. My site is www.allindianewspapers.com

Thanks a million

Oliver

Kalena's Answer:

Dear Oliver

I wouldn't worry too much. According to Google's Site Status Wizard, pages from your site are indexed by Google but Google does not yet know about all your site pages. Googlebot last crawled your site on November 1.

The site may have been indexed incorrectly via that problem site map, but provided your HTML code contains links to all your pages and your site map is now up to date, Googlebot should gather all your pages on his next crawl.

You might want to think about dumping that pop-up ad though. Google has taken a stance against home page pop-ups in the past.

Q and A: Why is Google only indexing my home page?

Dear Kalena...

I have a problem. My site is http://www.info-junction.net.

I first made the site in Joomla, 3 months back. At that time Google just indexed my home page. I was using opensef - a module that changes your dynamic page into a static html kind of looking page which is search engine friendly.

But no use - only the first page got indexed. I have seen numerous sites that use Joomla and are higly ranked with 6 PR.

So I thought may be I am doing something wrong, so changed the whole site to plain html, also added a xml sitemap, the site map was picked up by Google with no problems. Now when Google last indexed it again, it indexed only the home page. So I am Pissed Off once again :) .

Please take a look and advise me what to do in order to get the whole site indexed.

Abu

Kalena's Answer:

Dear Abu

I hate to tell you this, but you probably wasted a lot of time redesigning your site. Sites made with Joomla CMS are usually indexed with no problems. The issue wasn't your site design, it was the age of your site. When you launch a new site (or extensively re-design an existing one), Google generally places the site in a limbo area for a period up to 9 months. This is called the Google Aging Delay and during this time it will seem as though only your home page is indexed.

During the aging delay, you usually can't find your site on Google for anything apart from your site name or URL. Googlebot will visit your entire site though and release all the indexed pages into the datacenter after some time has lapsed. Although this is frustrating, it is perfectly normal and helps prevent spammers from manipulating the SERPs. Just be patient and build up incoming links to your site while you wait.

Q and A: Should .asp headers have META tags?

Dear Kalena...

Should include Asp pages have meta tags? eg .. < !-- #include file = "header.asp" -- >

Daad

Kalena's Answer:

Dear Daad

No, those type of page elements don't require unique meta tags. The page that contains the include should have tags. If the header is used on multiple pages, you don't need tags within it.

Q and A: Is SEO still a lucrative industry?

Dear Kalena...

Is SEO still a lucrative industry? Is the industry very saturated?

Thanks in advance
Jimmy

Kalena's Answer:

Dear Jimmy

My opinion is that there will always be a place for SEO because there is and there will continue to be a demand for consultants to help make websites more compatible with search engines.

The SEOs that will survive and prosper are the ones that are able to adapt to the changing requirements of the industry. For example, most traditional search engine optimization firms have had to embrace and add pay-per-click advertising to their range of services due to the growth of this field and resulting high demand from clients.

In terms of industry saturation - the survivors know that you need a niche in order to be successful. There are a million SEO firms, but how many specialize in the real estate industry? Or offer foreign language SEO? Or offer free SEO to charities? You just have to find a niche and stand out within it. As Matt Cutts points out, there are a LOT of niches.
