Think Global, Act Global

I'm waaaay too tired to answer an FAQ tonight, so I'll just point to an article of mine published today in SiteProNews: Think Global Act Global: Writing For Your Online Market.

It's about all those sites you see that claim to target an international audience when their content only caters to a regional one. If the article has moved from SPN's front page, try this archived version.

I just read your great article. I work for a translation company, and we face these issues every day. If you think the issues of British English and US English are a minefield try putting the content into Arabic or Chinese.

Hey Kalena,

Just read your article on English spelling differences around the World on the SitePro Newsletter.

I often get similar comments via email.

I generally reply to people who helpfully point out my spelling 'mistakes', that I speak and write using 'English' English.

Funny thing being is that I would never dream of emailing a USA site and telling them off for their dreadful spelling 'mistakes'!

The other common one is date and time format. In the UK it's day then month then year.

It doesn't take much common sense to work out that there's obviously no more than 12 months in any year, so I don't need helpful emails asking me what month is the fourteen month of the year for example!

I am getting into the advice game what do you attribute your success to?

Thanks everyone! Looks like I've struck a chord with this article. Glad to hear I'm not the only one getting the "helpful" emails from the language ignoramas :-)
