Q and A: Is there a better way to obtain keyword coverage than doorways?

Dear Kalena...

Thank you for the advice given in your blog regarding the doorways on our site. I am still a bit confused however; some of our competitors use the same tactics (ie doorways). Example: do a search for [search query removed] and [URL removed] will come up with a doorway and so will [URL removed]. The same for [search query removed]. And even more confusing on my part is that [competitor name removed] has more than one doorway that seems to my untrained eye to be exactly the same.

I would like to think that I can return the same good results as these other companies. Would the best course of action to take on my part be (as you say) removing all the current doorways, try and get the ban lifted and then create a doorway/content page similar to these other companies?

I need to have coverage in all these keywords and I can not see a way to do this without some form of doorway / content page and as the content I want to display will probably not be too different from page to page, how am I meant to do this? I feel these pages even though they are all the same minus the town name, do have a right to be there as the customer is searching for [search query removed] and that's what we deliver.

Sorry to bombard you with all these questions, please don’t go out of your way to answer them, if you don’t have time don’t worry about it. Thank you for any help that you can provide me.

There is a big difference between a "doorway page" and a useful "content page". It's all in the intention of the pages. If they contain good content, can stand on their own as unique pages, don't use any deceptive optimisation methods or excess links and are useful to human visitors, they can be safely classified as content pages.

If the intention is more for search engine purposes and they don't contain any significantly unique content for human visitors, then they are probably doorways. You can read up on the difference in this forum thread.

The clues to creating a good content-rich site without stepping over the line into search engine spam are all there in Google's Webmaster Guidelines. Note the limit on links per page, this is because the more outgoing links you have on your page, the less important Google sees each one individually and the less likely Googlebot is to index each one.

If the guidelines aren't clear enough for you and you really want start-to-finish advice about how to optimize a site correctly from the ground up, consider taking one of our SEO courses. Hope to see you in class!
