Q and A: If we change site platforms, will we lose positioning?
Dear Kalena...
We are moving our site from Yahoo store platform to rack space using Volusion. I am really worried about losing positioning. Any advice here?

Hi Terry
I think your move from a Yahoo store to your own server space is a good one. I've heard for some time that Yahoo store-based sites can experience difficulty getting their sites indexed and/or ranked well, because of the content management system technology used to build them.
In terms of not losing your existing rankings or traffic, you should implement 301 redirects from all your existing pages to your new pages to avoid your visitors getting 404 error pages once you change platforms.
Information on how to set this up via your .htaccess file is available from our feature article in last month's Search Light Newsletter. Information on how to set this up automatically using a redirect script is available from the follow up article in this month's newsletter.

Hi Kalena,
I understood that a major change in URLs like that could cause a Sandbox effect, even for existing sites. Is that true?
Theo
Hi Theo
It may be classified by Google as a new site launch, in which case it may be caught up in Google's "aging delay", but that is different to the Sandbox filter.
