Publicity for Publicity's Sake
There's been increasing discussion in the various webmaster forums lately about the questionable use of online press release distribution services by anyone trying to gain publicity for their sites.
Some of the announcements made at PR services like PRWeb are pretty amusing, particularly those that are simply blatant attempts at publicity for publicity's sake, or those that consist merely of keyword-stuffed drivel in some misguided attempt to gain search engine rankings for particular keyword searches.
What's sad is that many of these distribution services seem to rubber-stamp and circulate even the most pathetic press release submissions, so long as the submission fee is paid, despite their claim that all releases are subject to "editorial review and confirmation for approval and submission".
Some cheeky mods at the High Ranking's Forum laid down the gauntlet this week, to see who could create the most amusing Press Release via PRWeb and actually get it distributed.
And the nominees are:
1) Underpanters Get Their Own Trade Group
2) SEO Firm Raise My Rank Announces New Client and Search Marketing Experiments
(highly commended for inclusion of this sentence: "Experiments for the week included an attempt to determine the efficacy of the use of search engine submission forms and a study of the attention spans of editors working for online press release services").
3) Tap the Knowledge of the Undead for Increased Profit
