Q and A: Should I use AdWords Exact Match or Phrase Match?

I have just opened a Google AdWords account and I am adding very specific keyword phrases to my ad groups. I understand that selecting Google's "Broad Match" option would show my keywords in almost any combination with possibly other keywords too and I don't want that. What I want is to have my keyword phrases shown if people type those keywords in the exact order I specify but perhaps with the addition of other regional qualifiers like "New York".
To achieve this, do I use Exact Match or Phrase Match? I've read Google's keyword matching explanation, but I don't want to lose any potential traffic so I'm unsure which is best.

You didn't provide any keyword examples, which would have helped, but let's use one: blue wool socks. If you choose this phrase with broad match selected, queries that include the individual words blue, wool and socks plus plurals and relevant variations may trigger your ad, for example socks made of blue wool, where can I buy blue woolen socks.
If you choose this phrase with phrase match selected, ONLY queries that include the exact phrase "blue wool socks" with or without additional keywords may trigger your ad, for example blue wool socks are ugly, but NOT I like socks made of blue wool.
If you choose this phrase with exact match selected, ONLY queries consisting of the exact phrase [blue wool socks] should trigger your ad, no additional keywords, no plurals or variations.
If your keyword phrases include 3 or more words and are quite specific, you might be better off trying broad match to cover a large range of potentially related search queries without the need for additional keyword research. Remember you can always use broad match in conjunction with Google's Negative Keyword tool to ensure your ad isn't shown for specific keywords (for example the word "free").
