Q and A: Is there a future for SEO?

Dear Kalena...

I am a freelance web designer with 3 months of a 12 month contract left to run with a large design house. I am considering starting my own search engine optimization company from home at the end of my contract but with the focus now on paid search advertising, I am wondering how much of a future there is for SEO specialists?

SEO Startup

Kalena's Answer:

Dear SEO Startup

I think you've answered your own question there. It's true the search industry is moving towards paid placement faster than before, but there is still plenty of demand out there from sites wanting to achieve great results in the organic search listings too.

There's no reason why you can't start up your own SEO firm, but do you need to specialize in only organic SEO? For long term growth of your company, consider offering PPC campaigns and general website consulting services such as usability, copywriting and web design. Perhaps you could outsource these aspects of the business if you only wanted to do the SEO side of things.

Plenty of the smaller companies and home business operators simply can't afford the time or cost involved in running a successful pay per click campaign and simply want someone else to manage it or want their sites "fixed" for long term results in the search engines. You'll find the ability to diversify your service offerings to capitalize on industry trends will serve you best. Good luck!

Are there people who offer their SEO service on a contract basis? We're looking for help in optimizing our site - I've been trying to research SEO and do it myself, but I don't have the time to devote to learning how to do it well. I don't want a big company, but rather a freelancer or contractor...
