Q and A: How does Google's preference for older sites impact redesigned sites?
Dear Kalena...
SEO question for you: I understand that Google is placing more preference on old sites over new. How does that impact redesigned sites? Does Google treat them as 'new' or if the URL is the same, is it just viewed as new content? If a site is already ranking well for certain search terms, how do you minimise a redesign compromising those results? Sorry - so many questions.

You're right about Google's treatment of old vs. new sites. There is the Sandbox theory which is pretty well proven now. Some advice for coping with the new algorithm is here. Jill Whalen also provides some good advice in her article discussing Google's patent implications.
My own advice is to take care when redesigning new sites - don't over-optimise by adding loads of keywords or anything. Don't make too many changes to existing content. Simply make existing content more usable and/or add new pages with keyword-rich content (sensibly written, not keyword-stuffed). Make changes that add value for your visitors, not because you think they will help your rankings.
