Q and A: Are link farms considered a black hat SEO technique?
Dear Kalena...
I saw your search engine college on Pandia and I wanted to ask a question.
In regards to link popularity is their any emphasis given to relevancy? Is there anything we can do to compete with link farms. Are link farms considered a black hat SEO technique? I have noticed not all sites with many links rank well. Sometimes a site with 2 incoming links can beat one with a 100.
Do you have any suggestions with creating a good link popularity program and where is the best place to locate these links on sites?
Thanks
Michael

Dear Michael
You're absolutely right that a site with only 2 links can beat a site with 100. It's all about quality and relevance. It only takes a couple of links to you from sites considered high quality by Google to boost your link popularity considerably.
This works the other way too, where a bunch of links from low quality sites like Free For All pages and link farms can have a negative impact on your link pop score. I wouldn't call these black-hat techniques. So called black hat SEOs generally use tactics that are a lot more clever and sneaky than dumb old link farms.
So how does Google determine quality and relevance? Well, nobody knows the exact formula, but here are a few known factors:
- popularity of a site (highly trafficked sites are generally of good quality and can include sites like search engines, directories, blogs, news and media sites)
- relevancy of a site in relation to yours (if links pointing to your site are from sites of a similar or related theme, then they are considered more relevant)
- freshness of a site (high quality sites are updated with new content frequently, usually on a daily or hourly basis)
- history of a site (older domains are considered a more reliable indication of relevance)
My advice to you is to conduct a thorough search for niche search engines, directories and portals that have a similar theme to your own site and obtain a link from those. Reciprocal links aren't worth as much as one-way incoming links in terms of your link pop score.
Here is a list of sites where you will find plenty of other relevant search engines and directories to submit your site to:
