Yahoo! Competition Prize Demonstrates Value of Paid Search Advertising

I noticed today that Yahoo! had announced the winner of their Think Big competition amid huge fanfare and Bransoneque publicity.

I found the whole competition interesting, not so much because of the inventions (which were fascinating), but because of the concept of the grand prize: ten million ads across the Yahoo! network.

A few short years ago, people would have scoffed at receiving paid search ad impressions as a prize for a major competition. But with research about the spectacular growth of online consumer spending and the power of search to influence this spending being released on a weekly basis, it seems people have suddenly realized the true value of paid search advertising.

In case you're wondering who won the comp, it was StairCycle Innovations. But judging by the amount of publicity and advertising plugs surrounding the announcement, the real winner was Yahoo! Search Marketing (formerly Overture). Curiously, they didn't even link to the StairCycle site from their winner announcement page. Perhaps they think they've given StairCycle enough impressions already?
