A: Will adding my URL get my site listed faster in Google?

Simple. Your source is BOLLOCKS. As long as your site has a link pointing to it from a site already in Google, it will be found, end of story. I personally think the Add URL page is there as a kind of virtual placebo, provided by Google to placate the masses whose sites haven't been listed yet. Instead of bitching to Google, they can enter their URL and feel better about themselves. Brilliant.

I used the Add URL page and Googlebot came sniffing in less than 24 hours. My homepage was indexed and showed when I used a site: search. There were no other sites linking to my web site at that time. Sure it would have been found if another site linked to it. But would the bot have come within 24 hours of the other site putting up my link? Now, accordin to me, that depends on how often that other site is spidered. So why not jumpstart the process, with or without any backlinks in place, by submitting the site.

As a new web site owner, I didn't plan on bitching to Google nor did submitting my site make me feel better about myself. I guess I don't understand your tone. But whatever...

I still think the jumpstart theory is bollocks. But my main point is that your time would've been better spent submitting to a directory or making a cup of coffee because Google would've found you pretty quickly anyway.
